Things to Store with Wheat

Wheat has excellent nutritional value, a long shelf life and it comes in a wide variety of grains. If you choose to incorporate wheat into your food storage then you need to make sure that you eat it on a regular basis as a family. This will allow your family become used to the wheat and make the transition to your food storage easier. If you have chosen to include wheat in your food storage supplies you will need to make sure that you have additional items stored as well.

1) If you have chosen to store wheat you need to have a wheat grinder available to you. While you can include whole grain wheat in soups and other recipes, it is most commonly used as flour. I recommend purchasing an electric wheat grinder so that you can use it on a regular basis. However, you will still need to purchase a manual wheat grinder in case you are without electricity for an extended period of time. Most hand held grinders are fairly small and easy to store.

2) Another product, which you may want to consider storing, is wheat gluten. Gluten is added to dough with yeast in it. The gluten helps the dough to rise better giving the bread a better texture and flavor. Gluten can be stored in number ten dry pack cans. It has a long shelf life of seven to ten years. It is worth storing this product so your bread will turn.

3) You will want to keep a supply of yeast on hand as well. Yeast can store for about a year in the refrigerator. If your yeast becomes too old it will not work. This is yet another reason to rotate and use your food storage. An alternative to yeast is to have a sourdough starter available. In order to start the starter you do need a small amount of yeast. Starter is like a pet, it needs to be fed and cared for on a regular basis, so yeast is the easier way to go.

4) I highly recommend that you invest in cookbooks, which utilize wheat or wheat flour as the main ingredients. You can look for food storage cookbooks, whole food cookbooks or older cookbooks. These should all contain recipes, which utilize whole wheat and wheat flour.

If you plan on wheat being a main staple in your food storage you should begin to incorporate it into your diet now. Wheat is fairly inexpensive to purchase. It can be an economical way to stretch your food budget and provide good nutritional food for your family. If you are doing the siege storage method, you do need to incorporate your food storage into your daily diet. This is very important.
