One of the most important factors to keep in mind when shooting indoors is lighting. In your initial assessment of a room consider whether you will be using available natural light or your flash. Ideally you want to flood the room with as much natural light as possible. If the room has multiple windows open them to allow the natural light in. In the best-case scenario you will be able to fill the room with enough light so that you don’t have to use your flash. By eliminating the flash you’ll find your shots will not have those annoying orange overtones (which often happens when you are in auto flash mode and you are shooting an image from far away).
Be aware that incandescent bulbs give off an orange tint, and fluorescent bulbs give off a green tint. Most higher-end cameras have manual white balance features that allow you to offset color shifts. If your camera is equipped with such a feature be sure to use it when you are shooting in rooms with mixed lighting.
I should note that there is nothing wrong with using your flash. It’s just that the flash is better employed in smaller rooms with little natural or available light. Keep in mind that your flash will brighten objects closest to your camera, and darken objects that are farther away. With that in mind you’ll find that it really doesn’t pay to use your flash unless you are able to get close to your subjects. In most cases any object you are trying to capture past 10 feet or so will not appear very well. Your other option is to set your flash to MANUAL mode and keep it on the entire you are shooting. Doing so makes your camera more sensitive to light and will help expose more of the background.
