Toddler Stand Up Comedy

In the words of Uncle Albert in Mary Poppins, “I love to laugh, loud and long and clear!”

On most days, I think we have a blast in my house. We love to laugh, and laugh often. However, other than one basic knock-knock joke we tried to teach our girl last year, we have never approached structured comedy with her. That old one involved a banana and an orange as the punch line. Recently, we tipped our family toe a bit further into the comedic waters. We just got our hands on a clever new book called Mama’s little book of Tricks. It is a clever, imaginative collection of games, ideas, and interesting ways to keep kids occupied. Also, it just so happens that one page included a handful of kid-friendly jokes for Mama to keep the kids entertained. My daughter has already memorized three of these, and her delivery is so perfect that she gets big laughs from her extended family every single time. While we were in Florida with her grandparents a couple weeks back, she was on a roll while in the car driving to and from the beach. She was telling her three jokes over and over again and, believe it or not, they were getting FUNNIER the more she told them! She was fine-tuning her timing with each punch line.

Here is her routine:

Why was the number 10 afraid? Because 7-8-9!

What did one hat say to the other hat? You stay here; I’ll go on a-head.

Knock Knock. Who’s there? Danielle. Danielle who? [silence] Danielle who?? Danielle (don’t yell) so loud, I heard you the first time!

She changes up the order in which she tells them, and sometimes she needs the first word or two of the joke to get started, but that is ok, she is still getting her set down-pat.

Mama's Little Book of Tricks

The rest of Mama’s little book of Tricks (written by Lynn Brunelle) is equally as delightful. The compact book of 144 pages is organized into categories, all ending in “Mama” like Transporta-Mama (Transportation), Mangia-Mama (Eating), Nature-Mama, Sporty-Mama, etc and then sub-categories, for example underneath Eating is Dining In, Dining Out and April Fool’s Food Fun. This book is great for any family looking to have fun at home with their kids (age 2-7), which is our favorite thing in the world – we flip through this great collection at least twice a week looking for something cool to try, do, learn or laugh at, and never come away disappointed.
