Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy

Jessie and Daddy after surgery

Yesterday my toddler had her tonsils and adenoids removed. The organs were swollen and interfering with her ability to hear fine sounds and speech. She had Strep throat in March too.

I wanted to do the surgery sooner rather than later so that Jessie would have no memory of it and would have an easier time healing. I had my tonsils removed when I was 11 and the experience was awful. I had months of infections, secondary infections, and fevers prior to the surgery. The hospital was considering keeping me another night because I was so ill post. My recovery was long and difficult. The best part was two weeks home from school and another few weeks of no P.E..

I was a wreck in the days before the surgery. We had books about the surgery that we read to Jessie to prepare her. She’s so little, though, and the concept is so big that I doubt she got much out of the stories other than entertainment.

My biggest fear was about the nurses taking Jessie away from me and Jessie panicking. I didn’t need to worry. The nurse gave her something to make her happy and sleepy while her daddy and I were with her. She didn’t seem to even notice when another nurse picked her up and carried her to surgery. I cried.

We had to be at the surgery center at 7:15 in the morning. The surgery was very fast and Jessie woke quickly. We were on our way home around 10.

Jessie was not happy. She did not feel well. She spent all her time sitting in my lap. She cried a lot. Getting pain medicine into her was a struggle. I felt so bad for her and yet it was wonderful to snuggle.

Pray for a healthy and speedy recovery.
