Travel Savings—Rental Cars and Destinations

A few months back I wrote a blog about the high price of renting a car. From my computer to the desks of rental car company execs… not really. But, whatever it was that got the big wigs at Hertz to drop their prices I couldn’t be happier.

The rental car company has slashed prices to introduce their new “Simply Wheelz” program. The booking requires a computer, as it is an online deal. You can take advantage of rates starting as low as $15 per weekend day (and $94 a week) by simply reserving your vehicle online (the first rentals are available next month in places like Orlando, Florida).

The new budget car rental program works like this: Book online (click here to do so) then pick up your vehicle at a one-stop self-service rental machine, which scans a bar code from the printed confirmation statement you receive online. You then scan your driver’s license and select a few additional options (such as adding another driver or waiving the insurance), and then the machine prints the rental agreement. The key is waiting in the car.

The system is set up so that you do all the work; however, workers are on hand should you need assistance. They are also available to assist with the rental of portable GPS systems and child seats.

If you are looking for another way to save on your next vacation consider picking up a guide that provides information on where to go when for the lowest price. After all, one of the best ways to get an incredible travel deal is to get the timing down just right. For example, when is it cheapest to visit Hawaii, Italy or Antarctica?

The authors of “Where to Go When: The Best Destinations All Year Round” know. For $40 you get the “ultimate trip-planner” loaded with colorful photographs, travel tips, and money saving advice for more than 300 destinations. For instance, the guide recommends traveling to Tuscany, Italy in October, when the grape and olive harvests take place. If you have your heart set on traveling to Antarctica you should wait until February, according to the guide, because that’s when penguin chicks can be observed being cared for in and around their nests. The experience is reportedly something you can’t put a price tag on.
