Trunk-or-treat events are more popular than ever before. The alternative to traditional trick-or-treating is typically offered by church groups or other organizations that believe hosting a safe place for kids to gather goodies is preferable than having them exposed to various Halloween-related threats. And with the holiday falling on Sunday this year, church-sponsored trunk-or-treat events are set to take place at a record number of participating religious centers.
If you are planning to attend a trunk-or-treat event you might want to skip the chainsaw–wielding, axe-in-the-head, brains-oozing-out, zombie costume and select from one of these Bible-inspired getups:
Adam and Eve: Wear flesh tone or white bodysuits (or sweatsuits) and attach large leaves in the appropriate places. You can also add a headpiece made of leaves or flowers, and hang a plastic snake from Eve’s shoulder.
Mary: Pair a shapeless, white dress with a blue head covering and shoulder sash made from a sheet or other scrap material. To go as Mary carrying the newborn Jesus, place a baby doll, representing the Prince of Peace in swaddling clothes, in your arms.
Jesus: Dress in a full-length, long-sleeved white tunic with a solid colored sash. Next, add a long, dark wig and fake beard. Add sandals to your feet and carry a walking stick. Some costume shops carry the props to dress as a crucified Jesus, complete with plastic or latex crown of thorns, make-up and fake blood to create open wounds on your body.
Moses: Tie a rope belt around a brown robe or tunic. Next, cut out a plaque of the Ten Commandments from heavyweight cardboard or extra thick Styrofoam, then cover it with grey paint to make it appear as though it is stone, and use a black marker to write out the text.
Accessorizing is key when you are dressing up like a Bible character. To make your costume look more realistic add a few props. For example, if your child is dressing up like a shepherd, add a few stuffed sheep to go with his costume. Or, if your son is going as David, add a stuffed lion as Goliath and a slingshot made from giant rubber bands.
