Will turning off my computer ruin my hard drive?

Over the years, I have been asked the question on numerous occasions, “Which is better: leaving my computer on all of the time or turning it off after each use?” My response has often been lengthier than my inquisitors probably wanted, but I just wanted them to be informed.

A few weeks ago, we discussed the various power down options for Windows based computers (namely Windows XP, 2000, and ME). Since then, I have received a few more questions similar to that mentioned above: “Do I really need to turn my computer off overnight or can I just leave it on all of the time?” In light of these and other questions, I’ll try to answer some of the more common questions about computer power management and computer use. First, I’ll address the topic of hard drive life as related to turning your computer off and on. Later today, I’ll cover the energy use of leaving your computer on overnight versus turning it off.

Will turning my computer on and off daily ruin my hard disk drive?

No. As computer technology has evolved over the past few decades, home computers have become more robust and less fragile, in terms of how long they will last. As a result, it won’t wear your hard disk out if you turn your computer on and off each day. Hard disks are usually the main component that fails from daily use, but hard disk drives being produced today are very sturdy compared to those produced just 10 years ago.

Let’s take a look at a quick example of what it would take for you to wear out your hard drive by turning your computer on and off too much. Currently, the average expected lifespan of a home computer is somewhere near seven years, or five years if you want a conservative estimate. Today’s hard drives are rated to handle at least 40,000 cycles of being turned on and off. So, you’ll have to turn your computer on and off at least 15 times a day to wear out your hard drive over a seven year period.

Hard drives do have a limited life, however. Hard drives, as do most other electronic components, naturally wear out as they are used. Inside hard disk drives you’ll find moving mechanical parts which add to the reason why hard drives wear out over time. The average life of a hard drive is at least 3 years or so. So, you have a while before a normal hard drive will wear out. It is always a good idea to back up any important documents, photos, videos, etc. just in case your hard drive does fail.
