Two Frugal Summer Uses for Baking Soda

Baking soda is one of those miracle products that can be used for some many things. I am constantly discovering new uses for baking soda. Fortunately, baking soda is very frugal, costing just pennies per use.

I am still holding on to summer here. I know that back to school is coming up (or may have already passed for some of you), but summer doesn’t officially end until mid September. So, I thought I would share two nice frugal summer uses for baking soda. Of course, you can always apply these uses at other times of the year, but they are especially apt right now.

One great use for baking soda is as a rash soother. I found that little ones tend to get a lot of prickly heat in the summer, because of all of the baby fat folds in the neck and chubby thighs. Adding a half cup of baking soda to a warm bath is a wonderful way to sooth the rash. You can also try this remedy for diaper rash in a baby. It is gentle and less messy than constantly slathering on the diaper cream. After the bath, don’t rub the skin dry with a towel, as this can further irritate the skin. Instead let the skin air dry naturally.

Baking soda is a miracle cure and preventative, all-in-one for those scary moldy swimsuits and beach towels. Add a quarter cup of baking soda to a large ziploc-type bag. After changing out of the damp or wet clothes, add them to the bag and shake. The baking soda will absorb some of the moisture and keeps the mold and mildew away until you can put everything in the wash (even if they were forgotten in the car, and it is now three days later).
