My babies have always had fine, wispy hair. My daughter was practically bald until she was about 2. I longed for ponytails and braids, but instead, what we had was a sad looking mullet growing. It was not pretty. Finally, after a lot of grief from my sisters (one of whom is a hairstylist) I was talked into cutting off that cute little mullet. I didn’t regret it. And, it looked a lot better, even though she had less hair.
My third is now 10 months old, and has more hair than any of my other kids have had at this age. But, I have noticed him swatting at the growing sideburns that I’m sure tickle his ears, and there was one long hair in front that was hanging into his eyes. Not to mention the hair that kind of grew to a point anyway making him look a little like Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley for those of you old enough to remember that show.
My husband has been telling me for a little while now that my little guy needed a haircut, and this morning, he said, “Take these boys to go get haircuts today!” My three year old is in desperate need too. So, I declared, “I can do the baby’s! Just help me hold him still, and I will just trim a little around the ears and in front.” My skeptical husband (and rightly so) looked at me and said, doubting, “OK.”
So, I confidently grabbed my scissors, and got to work. I trimmed a tiny bit over his right ear and it wasn’t enough. So, I thought of all of the haircuts I’ve observed over the years (because that obviously makes you capable to cut hair) and I pulled it away from his head, between my fingers, and went for it. Oops. Let me just say that now he has a very distinct and not quite right looking sideburn over the right ear. Sorry, baby.
But, I console myself with the thought that at least his hair isn’t tickling his ears anymore. He may just have a complex about his lopsided sideburns. Oh well, at least we have our Christmas card picture taken for the year. Have you ever had an “Uh Oh!” Mom moment?
