Valentines Day: God’s Valentine

When you think of Valentine’s Day, what do you think of? Many people think about love, and spending time with the sweetheart in their life. Some people think of chocolates, flowers, dining out and taking time to let the person you adore know they’re special.

Some religions including Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate Valentines Day. Part of the reason is the pagan origins of the holiday, and some of it is because we should show love every day, not just on February 14th. Most of us take Valentine’s Day to go the extra mile and show our love to the special person in our life. I do show my husband love daily, but can’t afford to splurge daily. I think too, it’s good to have a special day in the year to kick us back into high gear with romance toward our spouse. I haven’t known many couples who’ve been together a good length of time that have sustained the amount of lovey-dovey affection shown traditionally on Valentines Day on a daily basis. God’s love doesn’t cease. He is able to splurge daily.

In addition to the traditional celebration of love on this day, how about using Valentine’s Day as a reminder of God’s unfailing ultimate love for us?

  • We give our loved one flowers; He gives us beautiful fields, mountains, oceans and topical paradises.
  • We make special dinner reservations for our loved one; He is preparing a feast for us in Heaven.
  • We give our loved one our life in marriage; He gave us His Son Jesus Christ so that we could spend eternity with Him if we should choose Him.

God’s ultimate “valentine” was becoming a sacrifice for us. There is no greater love; it’s a love that has produced priceless salvation to many. As you go about your day today, remember the lover of your soul and don’t forget to show your love toward Him.

  • “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
  • “Greater love has no one that his, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
  • “We love Him because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
