To keep our family busy for the Christmas season we are going to do all sorts of awesome things! This past weekend we went to the Gaylord Texan to see the ICE show. It is 2 million pounds of ice carved and colored like Shrek. The kids went sliding down an ice hill in 3 degree temperatures. We then went to the snow hills where the kids went sledding, made gingerbread men and saw an incredibly decorated life size ginger bread house and millions of lights.
It was amazing there are 50 foot high Christmas trees, elves walking around full of Christmas cheer. This was definitely something fun and memorable to start the Christmas season off for us. The next two weekends are going to consist of volunteering as a family.
This coming Saturday I am taking our Girl Scout Troop and their families to the DFW airport so we can all participate in the Welcome Home a Hero program. Every day there are about 275 troops that return through that airport for their 2 weeks of rest and recovery. Our troop has been making Thank You cards for the soldiers; we are passing out candy canes and cheering them as they exit the terminal. My family had done this once before as a service project for the school but this year we all are coming. It is such an incredible experience for everyone who is involved.
The girls love to see the smiles on the troop’s faces and for us adults well it is very touching. Last time we let the troops use our cells to call their families and tell them they made it state side safe and sound. Seeing the toughest soldier’s break in to tears when talking to their families is more than enough to bring the strongest person to tears.
We have raised our kids that if they see someone in uniform to say thank you this is one way that we can do it in big numbers.
