Want to Smell Like Derek Jeter?

Well, New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter has finally made the big leagues – he is going to have a cologne named after him. Joining the ranks of athletes Michael Jordan and Andre Agassi, it was announced that Avon Products Inc. is working with Jeter to develop a new signature cologne using his image called “Driven.” So now, you may not be able to field or hit like him, but soon, you will be able to smell like Derek Jeter.

So what exactly does Derek smell like? I do not personally know (although it would not be such a bad thing to find out!), but the cologne “Driven” will be a blend of crushed leaves, black pepper, chilled grapefruit, rhubarb, lavender, spearmint, bamboo, driftwood, and oak moss. Wow, it sounds like Derek ran through the produce department of a grocery store then through the yard out back. But, I am sure Avon has come up with a fragrance that captures all they were looking for – ambition, courage, passion, and confidence.

At the launch of the event, Jeter looked confident in a gray plaid suit. The event was held at Lever House, a favorite Manhattan restaurant. The cologne will be available to the public on in November, but Avon has already sent Derek several bottles and he says that is all he uses now.

Avon executive Liz Smith says Avon is glad to be collaborating with Derek. No doubt that in a sport that is currently plagued with rumors of steroid use and spoiled players, Jeter stands head and shoulders above most. Drafted by the Yankees in the first round in 1992, Jeter spent four years in the minors before making a name for himself in the majors. And boy, what a name – seven-time All-Star shortstop, Yankee team captain, 2,000th career hits, lifetime batting average of .316, Gold Glove winner, MVP of both the All-Star Game and the World Series, American League Rookie of the Year, and he has almost more World Series rings than he has fingers. Add to that poster boy good looks and Jeter is the perfect person to endorse your product. Not just a great ball player and pretty face, Jeter is also very charitable, having started the organization Turn 2, which helps children and teens avoid drug and alcohol addiction.
