Ways to Squeeze in Exercise

I am off the wagon again. I came into this week with so much to accomplish and so many outside things going on that I haven’t been able to squeeze in some exercise. I know that sounds like an excuse and in the past it has been one. However this time I really mean it.

The only moment I had yesterday to really sit down I almost fell asleep. That would have been a great opportunity to do even 10 minutes of something; however, I could hardly keep my eyes open. And the rest of this week isn’t looking much better.

Now there are times when I say that I am too busy for exercise but the reality is that I’m not. There are moments that can be squeezed in or choices that can be made which are good for you.

Let’s see if any of these will work for the rest of you busy people. What about when you first get out of bed? When I get up I make a beeline for the coffee maker. The better choice would be to stop and take just a few moments to stretch.

Now who doesn’t have a few moments in the morning? Even if you set your alarm just five minutes early to do some stretching, it will help to wake up and energize your muscles, along with limbering your joints.

Now you are off to work or taking the kids to school or wherever you have to go. There are choices that you can make which are better. How about taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator? Walking or biking instead of driving?

If you get a break at work, why not spend it taking a walk with a co-worker? Eat just a quick, light lunch and get on your walking shoes.

In the afternoon when you get that urge for a snack opt for something healthy such as fresh fruit. Afternoon fatigue can be a problem so skip the doughnut or cookie. Sugar will only deplete your energy and you will feel worse.

If you can’t take 30 minutes out of your day for exercise then do it in increments. That is usually my preferred way of exercising. Just by doing several 10 minute physical activities throughout the day it will all add up.

Don’t think of exercise as just being aerobics or walking. There are other ways that you can incorporate physical activity into your day such as walking your dog or doing some yard work.

The reality is that for most of us busy don’t really mean we have no time for exercise. It just means we haven’t made time. So get creative and find some ways to squeeze in exercise.
