Ways to Thank the Troops

Supporting military troops has always been an important issue with me. Many members of my family serve or have served their country so, from a young age, I learned what it was like to have a family member possibly in harm’s way and the sacrifices they give. When I married an Air Force member the realities of military life and what deployed troops endure became even more evident.

I would like to share with you some resources through which people can support the troops that are currently overseas defending our freedom.

Network for Good– This website has a section where you can make donations, be it money, time or goods, towards the well being of the troops. Monies are put towards such things as care packages, providing “comfort homes” at military medical centers and aid to military families. If you wish to donate something other than money you can give your Air Miles points to help send troops home for the holidays through the Operation Hero Miles program or donate books for soldiers to help pass the down time overseas.

Honoring American Troops– A wonderful website honoring both past and present heroes. Do you know of a soldier currently serving overseas? Nominate them to be soldier of the week.

America Supports You– News updates on programs to support the troops. Here you can see programs you can donate to or get ideas for organizing local showings of support. You can also send an email to US troops letting them know how much you appreciate all that they do.

It only takes a few minutes to say thank you, in any way that you can. I ask that everyone reading this please take a moment out of their day and, at the very least, send a thank you email to the troops. The soldiers are far from home, missing their families and trying to stay alive. Thank you is so little in return for all they give to us.
