A man in Eugene, Oregon learned that lesson the hard way. The really hard way. As in slamming-into-a-freight-train-with-a-car hard way.
According to police reports, the man was texting a pal from his cellphone while he was driving his car. At one point he looked up from his message and saw a freight train. Eugene police say the man tried to brake for the train, but it was too close and he crashed his car into the side of the Union Pacific freight train about 2 a.m. yesterday morning.
When rescue crews responded they found the man alert, but trapped in the car. Police say his injuries were not life threatening, and no members of the train crew were hurt.
The news was much better for a traveler in Arkansas.
A man from New Mexico was visiting Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas when he discovered a 2.28-carat white diamond.
Park rangers say the triangular white diamond is called a silver cape because of its frosty appearance and somewhat flat shape. The man who found it says it resembles the head of an eagle and planned to name it after his father.
According to park officials, the 2-carat bling is the 725th diamond found so far this year in the park.
For those of you who don’t know, Crater of Diamonds State Park is the world’s only diamond-producing site open to the public, where visitors can keep the gems they unearth.
Finally, here’s a story parents of teens might appreciate.
According to news reports, a 19-year-old Florida motorist, who was pulled over for driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph, told police he broke the law because he didn’t want to get in trouble for missing his curfew.
Police say the teen was clocked going 101 mph in a 2006 Hyundai and drove even faster before deputies caught up with him around 8:20 p.m. Sunday night. Police say the man told them that he was supposed to be home by dark and was afraid of getting into trouble.
Okay, two things stick out to me about this story.
First, how many 19-year-old’s do you know who still have a curfew? Let alone one that mandates being home by dark.
Second, who knew Hyundai’s could crack 100 mph?
The man was arrested for speeding and reckless driving. It’s reportedly his fifth ticket in the past 11 months… which could explain the curfew.
