What Do You Cook from Scratch?

Boy that supermarket makes it easy on a modern family who needs to eat. There are all sorts of dinner kits and ready made items. But it wasn’t too long ago that families didn’t have these things.

Families made practically everything from scratch when it came to meals. You might be surprised to know that some food that we consider to be basic staples are actually convenience foods.

So, I was wondering, what might we make from scratch the way that our mothers or grandmothers did? Getting back to making some basics will save a lot of money off of the food budget, and it is usually easier to do than you think. Here are some food items that could easily be made from scratch today.

Baking mixes. Before Bisquick, cooks simply put the ingredients together when they needed it or combined them into their own home made baking mix to be used later. This is simple and easy to do in bulk. Brownie mix, pancake mix and more can be put together inexpensively.

Yogurt. You’ll need a starter culture, so you’ll have to cheat by buying a regular plain yogurt at the store, but once you get going, making your own yogurt will be easy.

Bread. With or without a bread maker, yeast breads and dough (even pizza dough) are simple to make. Quick breads and muffins can be even easier. The best part is that they freeze well, so you can do some batch cooking, if you like.

Sauces and gravies. Throw a few tomatoes in a pot, cook them down, add seasonings and you have a quick and tasty tomato sauce. Alfredo sauce and white sauce are even easier to make. Gravies from stock go together quickly and are usually much tastier than the stuff you find in jars.

These are just a few food items that can be made from scratch.
