What Food Can You Freeze?

Freezer cooking can definitely save money and time in your household, but do you know which food freezes well? Understanding what you can freeze and what you can’t will help you avoid loss of food. Plus, if you know that something will freeze well, you can then stock up on that item or the ingredients to make it, saving even more money.

Here is a list of food stuff that can go in your freezer and be enjoyed later.

Baked goods, such as muffins, cakes, brownies, cookies, rolls, bread, buns, pie crust and pizza crust. For best results, frost cakes and cupcakes after they are defrosted. Ha.

Baking supplies, such as flour, sugar, baking chocolate, nuts, and yeast.

Dairy products, such as butter, block cheese, shredded cheese, cream cheese, milk (pour a bit out to allow for expansion) and yogurt. There may be some slight changes in consistency, but not in taste.

Meat, all kinds of meat either raw or cooked.

Fruit, such as blueberries, strawberries, cherries, bananas, raspberries, etc. Because fruit can get a bit soggy after freezing, it is best to use it in baking or smoothies instead of eating it out of hand.

Vegetables, such as asparagus, green beans, broccoli, corn, beets, carrots, onions, cauliflower, peas, peppers, spinach, zucchini and pumpkin. Most vegetables do better if they are blanched first. Chop onions and peppers before freezing to make it easier to add them into your recipes.

Sauces and soups, such as pasta sauce, chicken broth, beef stock, etc. Stay away from cream based soups for best results.

Don’t forget to freeze whole prepared meals, too, such as casseroles. You can find recipes and more information here.
