What Gets Your Creativity Going?

We can read all the “how to” business books in the world but that will not necessarily make us better business people. The trick is to figure out what motivates us and what we respond to. When it comes to getting creative, we really need to tap into our own resources and determine what gets our creative juices flowing.

We are all different. Recently, I was talking with a friend of mine who is just starting to work at building a home business and after making several suggestions, she finally said to me: “That just doesn’t work for me. I’m sure it works for some people but it really turns me off.” We then started talking about what DOES work for her and tapping into the things and processes that are inspiring to her as an individual. She shared that she identifies with being part of a team and sports—working on her own was tough and she found it tough to get motivated. Once we started trying to put some of her home business issues into that context, she came alive and felt more inspired.

Just because a brisk, mid-day walk works for some people—does not mean it will help you get creative. Other people find that drawing, journaling or having lunch with a friend can kick-start their creativity but that does not mean that there is something wrong with you if that is not what gets you going. I know it will take some self-awareness and it might even take some exploration while you figure out what inspires you to problem-solve and think creatively. You may find that some of those tried-and-true methods you read about in inspirational books and business magazines do help you—or you might find that your creativity comes from an entirely original place—special just to you!
