What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of energy work. It is a Japanese technique based on the idea that life force energy (Ki) flows through our bodies. When the energy is low, we are more prone to stress and illness; when the energy is high, we are capable of being happy and healthy.

The philosophy of Reiki is that it is a simple and natural method of spiritual healing that anyone can use. Anyone and everyone can learn and use Reiki, regardless of age and background.

The name Reiki comes from Ki — the life force energy — and Rei — the Wisdom of a Higher Power. So Reiki actually means “spiritually guided life force energy.” The flow of life force through our bodies is what makes us alive. Ki animates all living things — plants, animals, and humans. Other oriental medicines work with this same belief in the flow of life energy — like acupuncture and acupressure.

According to the philosophy of Reiki, your life force is responsive to your thoughts and emotional state. Accepting negative thoughts or feelings can disrupt the flow. Poor energy flow can have physical effects on your body. The spiritually guided life force energy of Reiki flows through the areas of disrupted energy in your body. It vibrates positive energy through the blockage, causing the negative energy to crumble and fall away. Reiki is thought to clear, straighten, and heal the pathways (called chakras, meridians, or nadis) of your life energy.

Reiki is a healing for both the practitioner and the client. Energy is neither created nor destroyed, and it is never depleted. It flows between the practitioner and the client, leaving both parties full of positive energy.
