What People Say About Marriage

It seems everyone has something to say about marriage and not all of those who talk about marriage portray it in the best light. Famous books and famous authors have had something to say about marriage. Which of these quotes sounds most like your marriage?

‘In marriage, happiness is just a matter of chance’ – Pride and Prejudice.

‘I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make my marriage vows mean what they say. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh’ – Anna Quindlen, A Short Guide to a Happy Life

‘No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century’ – Mark Twain

Many of our movies contain comments about marriage, as this book shows. Again, not all of them are positive.

‘The trouble with marriage is that it’s relentless. Every morning when you wake up, its still there,’ Chapter Two (1979)

‘No matter who you marry, you wake up married to someone else, Guys and Dolls’ (1955)

‘Why couldn’t we have arranged marriages in America? At least you could spend the rest of your life blaming your parents instead of yourself,’ Only You (1992)

Here are some more positive ones. Read through them and think about them. Many of them talk a lot of sense.

‘A happy marriage has in it all the pleasures of friendships, all the enjoyment of sense and reason – and indeed all the sweets of life’ – Joseph Addison

‘A happy man marries the girl he loves; a happier man loves the girl he
marries’ – Anonymous quote

‘We are told that people stay in love because of chemistry, or because they remain intrigued with each other, because of many kindnesses, because of luck. But part of it has got to be forgiveness and gratefulness’- Ellen Goodman

‘A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, and always with the same person’ – Mignon McLaughlin

‘It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages,’ -Friedrich Nietzsche

‘To keep your marriage brimming,
With love in the loving cup,
Whenever you’re wrong admit it;
Whenever you’re right shut up.’ – Ogden Nash

As you read through these quotes which one sounds most like your marriage? I like the Anna Quindlen, the Ellen Goodman, the Mark Twain and the Friedrich Nietzsche ones, though the Ogden Nash has a lot to recommend it too, donlt you think?
