When the “Want” Isn’t There

In my last blog I talked about the “start again” routine that so many of us battle. We will start again on Monday, after the next holiday and the list of excuses goes on. When you get serious about fitness there is no “start again” thinking going on. Now is the time.

But I also talked about how you have to want to get in shape, lose weight, eat healthier or whatever else you have purposed to change. Yet the truth is that many of us don’t. I mean, sure, on a surface level we want to but if we had a desire deep down inside to make those changes then we would do it.

So we have to be real and honest with ourselves. If the want isn’t really there then we have to get it there. It is pretty much impossible to make changes if you don’t really want to. If you keep coming up with excuses why it shouldn’t happen then you aren’t ready.

I would like to tell you that I have a magical key that can unlock the door of your want. I don’t. I “wanted” to lose weight for several years. In fact, it started way back after I had my first child…who I will mention is almost 17 years old. But as you can see, my want hasn’t produced much.

I have been up and down the rollercoaster ride of diets and exercise. I have tried some things, succeeded at some and failed at others. But nothing has really stuck with me.

For the first time, however, I truly want to get healthier. There was just something about the prospect of turning 42 next month, knowing that I will be hitting those years where your health becomes a bigger concern.

I also decided that I want to be healthier not only for myself but for my children. As much as I could stand to lose a few pounds my desire for fitness has been more about fighting off heart disease, diabetes and other serious diseases.

One day I envision being a grandmother and I want to be able to enjoy my grandchildren. I am looking far into the future but it’s helping me to gain that desire.

I don’t know what it will take for you. Maybe seeing yourself in some pictures, looking at some old photographs when you were at a healthy weight, researching into the health conditions that so many Americans battle with…I really don’t know what it will take for your want to happen.

But when the want isn’t there, nothing will change. So your next step is to figure out what it will take for you personally to get that want.
