When Weather Takes Over

It is amazing how much the weather can affect your home, and consequently your life. For the last couple of weeks, we have been shown this to be so true. From wind and rain that seemed to come out of no where and stayed practically forever, our home and yard has been greatly affected.

On one particular day, for example, all three of our car windshields were broken from falling tree limbs! Yes, so there was the expense for three repairs, right there. Of course, I did score a point for having us all clean out the garage so we could store one of the cars away from the elements.

Due to all of the ground soaking, it has become soft. Consequently, there are three trees that are now down in our front yard. These will need to be cut for firewood and the thinner branches added to the brush pile to be mulched or burned later.

The wind and rain has also brought down a slew of leaves and smaller branches. The are covering everything like brightly colored snow. This afternoon, I’ll take the younger kids out a bit earlier in the day, and get all of that mostly cleaned up while we wait for the school bus. It is one of the first sunny days here, so I am looking forward to the outdoor exercise. Hopefully, I can get the leaves blown off of the house.

This little episode has been a good reminder that we need to start preparing our home for the winter. With more rain predicted on the weekend, it will be a challenge to try and do what we can from the inside out, or at least get a couple of tasks done during the week.

One thing to be done, for example, is to wash all of the cushion covers for the porch furniture and store them away or at the very least, get covers for the furniture and rearrange it closer to the house.
Have you started on your fall clean up or winter preparedness yet?
