There was a time when my young daughter wanted nothing to do with the Easter Bunny… at least the one at the mall. Time has apparently erased the bad feelings she had for the candy-toting rabbit because now all she talks about is how she wants the Easter Bunny to bring her a real rabbit to care for, instead of the chocolate kind.
Greeeeeeeeeeeeat!
How did bunnies and baby chicks become the poster animals for Easter anyway? What’s more, do parents really present live bunnies and chicks to their kids on Easter Sunday? I’m no farmer, and I highly doubt my 6-year-old understands that the responsibility of owning a bunny doesn’t stop once Easter is over. Needless to say, I highly doubt the Easter Bunny will be including one of his offspring in my daughter’s Easter basket this year.
Of course, that means I have to figure a way to soften the blow of my daughter not getting the real deal this Easter. My list of options includes:
Stuffed Bunny: She loved the movie “HOP,” so I could get the stuffed E.B. from Build-a-Bear. It may be fitting coming from the real Easter Bunny. Also, I noticed on the Build-a-Bear website that E.B. comes with real drum sticks. I’m sure my daughter would love those.
Movies: Target is selling a slew of Easter-related DVDs. I saw a Dora, Max and Ruby, the Berenstain Bears and a few Disney flicks.
Books: The Easter Bunny can never go wrong with books. Barnes and Noble has an entire display of Easter theme children’s books including a bunch of activity books I know my daughter would love. Check bargain book stores too, as they often discount seasonal books this time of year.
Jewelry: My daughter is not a girly-girl, but she did express interest in those Squinkie bracelets that allow you to add the little animals as charms. If your child is not into plastic jewelry, the holiday is a great time to present a piece of fine jewelry that will one day be a family heirloom. You can choose from delicate silver bangle bracelets, heart-shaped lockets, small diamond studs, and silver or gold rings.
What will you be filling your kids’ Easter baskets with?
