Where Dirt Hides

If you’re short like me, you may not notice dust and dirt above eye level unless you’re in cleaning mode and actively looking for it. The latter actually applies to dirt at any level. There are many places where dirt can hide that we don’t readily notice.

“Nooks and crannies” are notorious hiding places for dirt, dust, and debris and every home has it’s share of these tiny crevices.

Have you looked in the tiny spaces between appliances and cabinets lately? The area along the sides of the stove can become a catchall for crumbs. Shine a flashlight in that area and be prepared for what you may find. It may not be pretty. Look under the stove and refrigerator as well. If the cook top lifts up on your stove, take a peek beneath it. Food and grease can accumulate there quickly.

Throughout the house there are other areas between furnishings, fixtures, and cabinetry that can also become messy. A long handled dryer vent brush may be a good cleaning tool for such areas, but it’s a good idea to keep a separate one for cleaning the dryer vent.

You may need something smaller, such as a coat hanger or piece of stiff wire. Attach a treated cleaning wipe to one end securely and then reach into the confined space with it, pulling dirt and debris, outward toward you.

Also, look over furnishings carefully, especially those with removable cushions. Check beneath cushions and pillows and also look at the cushions themselves. If they have trim or piping, crumbs and other particles can rest in the tiny space between the trim and the cushion surface. A quick swipe with the vacuum, using the crevice tool, should do the trick. For sticky spots, try a soft damp cloth or use mild detergent if necessary.
