If traveling to Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is out of the question, then why not make your Irish eyes smile by traveling to some equally amazing, but far closer green-rific destinations this month:
Chicago
The Windy City knows how to make other cities green with envy by hosting spectacular St. Patrick’s Day events. One of the most popular is the Irish Miracle, which started in 1962, when the city of Chicago dumped dye into the river and it turned the entire thing green. On Saturday, March 12th, the city will keep the tradition alive by sending a bunch of boats into the river and coloring it green while tens of thousands of spectators look on. The best places to see the annual river dying are the East side of the Michigan Avenue Bridge, the West side of the Columbus Drive Bridge or upper and lower Wacker Drive between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive. You can then head over to Balbo Avenue and Columbus Drive near Grant Park and watch Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.
Boston
Another St. Patrick’s Day celebration steeped in history is Boston’s parade dedicated to honoring all things Irish. The parade has been marching since 1901, and this year, organizers are expecting more than 600,000 people to watch a dizzying array of pipe bands, floats and dancers make their way from Broadway to Thomas Park, Telegraph Street, and end in Andrew Square on March 20th.
New Orleans
March is a huge month for partiers in New Orleans. Just when Mardi Gras celebrations end, the Big Easy gears up for another massive street party. The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade trades beads for cabbage, potatoes, carrots and onions, which are thrown at the crowds that line Metairie Road. You can enjoy the costumes, flowers, floats, and marching bands on Saturday, March 13th.
