Most years I dread taking down the ornaments for the tree, not because of all of the work involved but because of the fear that we won’t have enough ornaments. Most of the ornaments we have are either broken or long faded. Since they were never family heirlooms, with the exception of a handful of ornaments, I don’t feel bad about replacing them. They were mostly hand me down and tacky dollar store ornaments. The problem is, that buying new ornaments can be expensive, especially when you have an entire tree to fill.
So that was my mission: find some inexpensive but not cheap-looking ornaments.
Target
Target has a sale going on this week in which you can get some inexpensive glass ball ornaments. There are a lot of different colors and styles. I picked up three boxes (they were buy 2 get 1 free on top of the discount).
Garland
I found some inexpensive snowflake garland. The garland consisted of small plastic snowflakes that were really detailed and pretty. I simply took the garland apart, added hooks and then had about 40 new snowflake ornaments, ready to go. The garland only cost me $2. Look for other types of garland that can get pulled apart into ornaments.
Ribbon
Those ribbon bows that are sold everywhere now look so pretty. The only problem is that it can cost $5 for just a few bows. Instead, go take a look at the ribbon section of your local craft or fabric store. Often there is an array of pretty ribbon. Tie your own bows, and you can save quite a bit of money. Check the ribbon bargain bin first. I have found pretty ribbon in Christmas colors there. If the pin comes out of a spool of ribbon or the plastic wrapper comes off, the ribbon usually ends up there, at a deep discount.
