Who Rules the Roost In Your House?

This morning, my husband and I woke up groggily after a night of sleep with a baby in the house. Every night is unpredictable. Every night, we never really know how much sleep, or should I say, how little sleep we are going to get. My husband and I left our sweet baby sleeping in the middle of our bed. He came up to me and told me that when he wakes up, I should go in there and stand at the foot of the bed and look at how the covers are on our little babe. He said, “It looks like he is definitely king of our bed right now”.

It was quite humorous. Baby boy was smack dab in the middle of the bed, arms sprawled out, and taking up as much room as his little four month old self could take. He was fast asleep after his 5 am nursing. The rest of the house was now busy getting our older child off to school and my husband off to work. He slept through it all.

Do you sometimes feel like your baby rules the roost in your house? I know I do. It can be an exhausting feeling. Walking on eggshells when they are sleeping, and spending lots of time catering to their schedules. But, you have to remember it won’t be that way forever. They will eventually learn to sleep through the night despite what you do or don’t do. They will eventually roll over, sit up, crawl, walk. They will learn how to feed themselves. They learn how to talk (and sometimes a little too much), they learn how to use the potty and give up their pacifiers.

The truth is, I know it goes by too fast. I know that one day that day will come when my last little one has left the roost. But, in the moment, it can be hard to gain perspective. So, I try to take it one day at a time.

Today was not an easy one. I’m trying to potty train my older boy and work on introducing formula to my baby due to his tummy troubles. My little goal of mopping my floors today hasn’t been done yet. But, I know that I’m doing the right thing for my kids right now. I’m there for them when they don’t make it to the potty, or have a huge blow out in the swing. Whatever it is, I’m there. And, I feel grateful to have these three little people in my roost right now. Even if I’m not always in charge.
