Winter Adventure Travel Packages—Colorado

I’ve never been much of a snow bunny (the side effect of being born and raised in Hawaii). Rather, I’d consider myself more of a fireplace bunny who enjoys watching the action from inside a cozy chalet sipping on my marshmallow topped hot chocolate. However, I am related to an extreme winter sports enthusiast. My brother waits all year to immerse himself in winter activities.

I thought about him as I was researching this next winter adventure travel package. Today I am continuing my series of blogs spotlighting various winter tours for those of you who have a high tolerance for below-freezing temperatures.

Check out this next deal specifically designed for adrenaline junkies.

Telluride Helitrax’s “Ultimate San Juan” package provides an out-of-this-world experience for skiers. For about $2,300 per person guests take part in a six-day, five-night winter travel package designed for hard-core winter sports enthusiasts. The trip features heli-skiing, snow-cat skiing, hike-to skiing, and guided skiing at one of the steepest ski areas in the country–Colorado’s San Juan Mountains.

Tour operators note that because the San Juan Mountains are the youngest mountains in Colorado (with 80 peaks over 13,000 feet) they haven’t experienced the wear and tear of some other mountain ranges. Therefore the terrain is very steep, to the point where they resemble the Alps or the Canadian Rockies.

The best part about this package is that Helitrax makes all the arrangements for you, including setting up accommodations at nearby hotels and they work around the itinerary you design. Meaning you can arrange a schedule based on your wants. For example, you can spend one full day participating in each type of skiing or you can spend all six days just heli-skiing. A typical heli-skiing day with Helitrax includes getting in about six runs equaling 8,000 to 14,000 vertical feet. Another option is a full day with the San Juan Ski Company that will take you to untracked powder in the San Juan National Forest via snow-cat. The trip also features one day each at two unique ski mountains. At Telluride Ski Resort, you’ll ski the backcountry with a guide. Then, you’ll hit the slopes at the top-rated ski area in the nation for powder and steep terrain, Silverton Mountain, where the skiing is so extreme you’re required to go with a guide and carry avalanche survival gear.

Guides and some meals are also included in the package price. Transportation is not included. Trip dates are available from early January through April 10. As I mentioned earlier, itineraries are flexible and extra days and activities can be added.
