Working on Things You Hate

As a parent, I often have the conversation with my kids about how adults have to do things they don’t like—we do not always get to pick and choose only those things we love and enjoy. Part of living in this world is acknowledging that there are going to be those things we hate, that we still have to do—AND, part of operating a home business is acknowledging that we are going to have to do those things we hate in order to make our businesses run smoothly.

I think people fall into two camps when it comes to dealing with the “things we hate” issue—those of us who do the things we hate first, to get them out of the way—and those of us who put off the things we hate until the very end. I tend to be in the first camp, and I’ve learned over the years to give myself little rewards in order to motivate myself to do those icky things. For example, I’ll spend a morning doing submission research, if I can reward myself with an afternoon of writing work.

Interspersing the un-fun things with the fun things can be a good way to get through business tasks you absolutely hate. For those things that you really just can’t bring yourself to do—you may be able to find someone else to do them for you (this works for anything from bookkeeping to housework!). There is absolutely no shame in admitting that you would rather do one thing than another and paying someone else to do the thing or things you hate. After all, that is one of the joys of a capitalistic, free market economy! And, there are an awful lot of home businesses that have sprung up just to help people take care of unsavory tasks and things they don’t really want to do…
