What can you make out of yarn? Almost anything if you use your imagination. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Spider
Wrap black yarn around three fingers several times. Pull the loop off your fingers and tie it tightly about one inch from the top with a small string of yarn. Cut through the bottom of the loop. Splay the fringes out to look like spider legs. The ball at the top is the head and you can glue on googly eyes or cut small white circles from felt and glue them on. Inside the white circles, add smaller circles from black felt or dots of black paint.
Tassels
Make tassels from any color yarn you live following the first three steps above. Make larger or smaller tassels by wrapping yarn around your entire hand or around two fingers instead of three. Tassels can be sewn onto other items as a decorative trim or they can be added to key chains, zipper pulls, or light pulls.
School Spirit Pom-Poms
Use yarn in your school colors and wrap it around your hand about 50-75 times. Pull the loop from your hand and tie it tightly in the center. Cut through both ends of the loop. Flip the top half down and smooth the strands so it looks like a cheerleader’s pom-pom. Add a handle made from a drinking straw cut to size and covered in matching felt. Glue it to the top center of the pom-pom. As an alternative, make pom-pom “mascots” to distribute at pep rallies or sell for fundraisers. Glue on googly eyes, and make feet from cardboard covered in felt. Glue the pom-pom mascot to the feet. Make a pennant with your team’s name and attach it to a piece of pipe cleaner then glue it to the pom-pom. Another fun idea is to cut a small #1 sign complete with index finger pointing upward, from craft foam. Glue it to a pipe cleaner then to the pom-pom.
