Yoga for Couples

Yoga offers many physical and emotional benefits. For many people, the inner peace and contentment they feel with the regular practice of yoga is what keeps them coming back to the mat. This connection is experienced with partners in couple’s yoga classes.

Couples yoga has gained popularity in the last few years and is likely to continue to grow. There are many types of couples yoga classes offered. Really, any form of yoga can be practiced together. The trick is finding a form of yoga that both partners enjoy and that meets your needs.

For example, if you are both interested in getting in better shape, losing weight and toning the muscles, power yoga is an excellent choice. If you are both new to yoga and prefer to take it slower, try a gentle hatha class. If you are both under stress at work and at home, consider a restorative yoga class. The type of yoga doesn’t matter.

You can check with your local yoga studio to find an organized couples yoga class. If there are none available, or you prefer to practice at home, you can use a DVD or create your own practice. Select relaxing music with nature sounds and light a few candles to create a relaxed atmosphere for your practice.

There are several aspects that make couples yoga unique, compared to individual yoga practices. Performing the asanas with a partner enhances not only the physical aspects of accomplishing the poses, but increases communication and builds trust between the couple.

The lives of nearly all couples are consumed with work, family, taking care of the home, and a host of other responsibilities and commitment. This leaves precious little time for just being together. Breathing and relaxing together at the end of a vigorous practice is the perfect way to experience peace in the moment with your loved one.
