Yoga Types: Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga is a form of hatha yoga that was developed over 60 years ago by renowned yoga master BKS Iyengar. This is a traditional form of yoga, which is based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It is one of the most popular types of yoga practiced in the United States and throughout the world.

This form of yoga is similar to hatha yoga in the poses. The same basic asanas are used in Iyengar yoga as in other forms of hatha yoga. There is the ultimate aim of a mind, body, spirit connection, as in other yoga types with a focus on meditation.

Iyengar yoga promotes flexibility, balance and endurance through precise alignment of the body in each asana with attention to correct form. The movement is coordinated with the breath in this form of yoga. The teacher offers guidance and corrects improper alignment to enhance the students’ practice.

Unlike power yoga and vinyasa flow classes, the movements in and out of each asana are slow in Iyengar yoga. The poses are held for a longer period of time as well. This can be anywhere for a minute or two, depending on the class and individual’s fitness level.

Iyengar yoga uses props frequently. If you plan to try Iyengar yoga, you should have blocks and straps or belts. Other props, such as blankets and cushions are sometimes used. Through the use of props and modifications, this form of yoga is suitable for anyone. The props assist the student in achieving the correct body alignment in each asana.

Students of this form include elderly students, disabled people and those who have suffered injuries. The use of cushions and blocks offers the support needed, while experiencing the physical and mental benefits of the practice. For this reason, yoga therapy often incorporates Iyengar’s form of hatha yoga.

Iyengar yoga offers similar benefits to other yoga practices. The practice promotes general health and well being, and offers stress relief benefits. These classes can be found in many yoga studios and some gyms. Teachers are required to take a two year training course and continuing training after their initial certification.
