Young Men: Priesthood Preview for Eleven Year Olds

If you have a boy who is eleven years old, it is time to begin thinking about him receiving the Priesthood. In November, each ward should hold a Priesthood Preview for all the boys who are eleven years old. This is a meeting, which is directed by the bishop. The Primary presidency may be asked to speak during this meeting as well.

The meeting will explain the responsibilities that the boys take on as they move up into the Aaronic priesthood. The bishop may talk about the worthiness interviews, as well as what is expected of the boys as they receive the priesthood. The meeting is a time for the boys to feel the support and love that the bishopric has to offer them.

It is very important that you take the time to attend with your son. If one parent is not a member of the church, they are welcome to attend as well. This may help him to understand exactly is happening as his son receives the Priesthood. It is important to show support to your son as he takes on this added responsibility.

If there are not very many eleven-year-old boys in your area, the Stake may put on the Priesthood preview instead of the ward. The meeting would cover the same topics, but it allows the boys to see others who are taking on the same responsibilities.

You can further help to prepare your son, by encouraging your husband or home teacher to share their experiences as they first received the priesthood. You can also hold a family home evening lesson on the priesthood. You will also want to purchase a white shirt and tie for your son to wear when he passes the Sacrament. It is also important to support him as he begins to attend Wednesday night activities. You may need to plan to arrive at church earlier so he can fulfill his Sunday duties.
