Give Me a Break! Finding a Babysitter for Your Special Needs Child

20 May 2006 11:32 PM

You lucked out in getting a respite worker. I wrote on my site rules for a respite worker and no smoking is on it. We had a good one years ago, Maria, but then she took a full time assignment with a boy and did not need to work with other families.

Last summer I could not get out of jury duty and went through three agencies with Regional Center in trying to find someone and in the end I had my kids stay late at the summer day camp and $10 per hour per child and RC reimbursed me. I had to drive to camp, take a metro rail to court house and go back and it was exhausting, but educational and interesting to meet others and they all wanted to know more about autism and were surprised I could not get excused.

Oh, Those Handicapped Parking Spaces...

20 May 2006 11:25 PM

I have one for my son Matthew. The summer autism daycamp they go to has field trips where the teachers use their vehicles and take them there. The Director told me last year that she had 4 or 5 of these parking permits. I am not sure how she went about it, but it is good information to share for other camps and non-profit schools that might not have a school bus and transport kids in their cars.

Bulimia: Diagnostic Criteria and Treatment

20 May 2006 11:18 PM

HI there - I have two kids on the autism spectrum with an ex husband who has Paranoid Schizophrenia. For several months when we were living in Florida he was bulimic. I believe it was due to not having access to drugs and he would run a few miles every day and I would hear him in the bathroom. We split up soon after that, but he was going to the Dentist complaining about his teeth, and my research told me that it was due to the Bulemia, but the Dentist had no clue he was Bulemic.

He is off meds now, at one point he was on Risperdal and then my son was on it. I would never think an adult male in 40s would be bulemic, but it did happen.

Solve Your Child's Eating Problems

20 May 2006 11:03 PM

My non verbal son has been attending feeding therapy for three years now. I plan on writing the goals on my site one of these days and today posted about the feeding assessment - I was not thrilled with it - totally overwhelming. Luckily it was several years ago. Matthew is now stuffing his mouth with food and I am teaching him to chew and only put a few bites into his mouth. My other son who is HFA is a very slow eater naturally.

Regarding instant breakfast drinks - most of them have artificial sweeteners in them, like aspartame. I removed that from our diets long ago - it is found in breath savers too.

Nice article with helpful tips. Thanks

PS I had subscribed but never got anything in my email. I think I did it correctly this time with My yahoo so I can get notified when you post.

Could My Child Have Schizophrenia?

09 May 2006 07:11 PM

Even though both my kids are on the Autism Spectrum, they have a 50% chance of having Schizophrenia as they get older since their father is Paranoid Schizophrenic.

Also the lack of personal hygiene could be a sign of OCD.

Childhood Seizures: What Parents Should Know

09 May 2006 06:54 PM

Nice informative article. I found this site through a google search to learn more about seizures. My nonverbal son puts his hands over his eyes and stops what he is doing for a few seconds and then goes back to whatever. I was trying to decipher if this is a type of seizure. My sister had a brain tumor and I witnessed seizures, but they were jerking head movements.

I have no idea what tags meant and would like to delete it since it worked out wrong. Where do I go for that?

Anyway I hope to put some links on my site from your blog when I update this weekend. Bonnie Sayers http://autismspectrumdisorders.bellaonline.com
