Southerners Spank Their Kids More

02 Aug 2009 07:27 PM

I've watched a couple of the nanny shows and am not surprised that many of the parents who spank their children have children who have serious problems with aggression. Spanking is a way for parents to take out their frustrations on their children. Parents should talk to their children about dangers, feelings, and behavior. Forming relationships based on healthy communication will help them for their entire lives!!

I've heard that parents spend an average of 10 minutes talking to their children each day... These parents are probably the ones who are angry at their children for them not listening to them.

How NOT to Help Your Kid Get Into College

This story is shocking. I can't believe the mother changed the grades of other students! It would be bad enough for her to abuse her power to change her daughter's SAT scores, but other kids! WOW!

How Long is Too Long for Kindergarten?

01 Aug 2009 07:49 PM

This is a long time to be in school for a child. However it is not abnormal for children (infants on up) to be in daycares from early morning to evening. I used to work at a Montessori where many children were dropped off at 7 and picked up at 5:30.

When the Gym Teacher Goes Nuts

This seems quite intense for an Elementary School game.... As for your opening statement: I've had many wonderful teachers - PE included, and can assure all that teaching IS doing : )

Would You Allow Your 15-Year-Old Daughter to Date a 20-Year-Old Guy?

01 Aug 2009 07:31 PM

I wouldn't worry about Miley dating older guys. The sixteen year old (who earns over $3 million per year) is probably a lot more mature than a teenage boy. If girls in the greater public mature faster than boys, I can only imagine how mature they must be when they have grown up working in Hollywood.

Lets hope though that her fans don't follow in her footsteps...

A Mother's View from the Pool: Why are you Wearing Crocs in the Water?

01 Aug 2009 06:45 PM

I wonder why the lifeguards do not enforce the rules at your pool.

It can be frustrating on playgrounds and other public places when other children's parents ignore enforcing rules or let their children behave in ways that seem quite unsafe. (Or when there are older children with no parents in sight blatently breaking rules). We've found that our daughter is alright when we simply tell her that other families may have different rules than ours.

Parents Confused After Daughter Gets Booted from the Girl Scouts

01 Aug 2009 06:35 PM

This is very sad. The experience of having a special needs child in the girl scout troop could have been an opportunity for the girls to learn about autism. I am sure that with discussion, time, and a little compassion the girls would have become more comfortable with their new scout. Not to mention how beneficial it could have become for Magi...

So glad I live somewhere where bullet proof backpacks are not on our back to school shopping list...

Eight Rules for Buying Groceries without Coupons

01 Aug 2009 06:23 PM

Another great way to save on groceries (if you have space and a little time) is to grow food at home. It is amazing how expensive produce has become. I started a garden in the spring and am amazed at how many goodies I can get with hardly any cost. For example corn is a dollar an ear, I have grown nearly a hundred for $2.49! Twenty tomato plants for $1.49! Oodles of squash for $3.00! We also have several pots on our deck that are thriving. If you live in an apartment a window or a small deck, it is still possible to make a dent in grocery bills. If you have kids it beneficial for them because it is fun and healthy...

Introducing Yourself to Your Child-Part Two: The Meeting

01 Aug 2009 06:03 PM

I've haven't heard many stories of how new adoptive parents first bond with their children. This one is very touching and wonderful to read. Your child's foster mother sounds like she was very good at letting go. I can only imagine how difficult that would be.
