Depression topic - Journal Entry

15 Aug 2006 08:53 AM

I wish more people would speak up about this as you did. I had no idea there was any such thing as PRE-partum depression, until I had it! And there I was, happily married, two great kids, looking forward to the baby, but still, a crushing depression and sometimes rages that left me wanting to do something terrible. You're right, getting help is best; we're in no fit state to help ourselves when it hits. Hope you're doing all right these days... hang in there!

I know how you're feeling...and I'll bet a lot of other women here will too. It's VERY hard when you shift into "baby gear" without the baby! This happened to me when my son was about a year old, and he was so absolutely perfect I couldn't wait for the next one. But the next one didn't come, month after month, then year after year. I thought I'd lose my mind, all I could think was "baby", their smell, their toothless smiles, their little clothes.... you know what it's like.

Finally, I had a positive pregnancy test, and was overjoyed; my son was five years old. But, it ended in miscarriage, and worse, THREE female relatives of mine were pregnant at the same time. I was desperate. Two years later, I finally have my little baby, and am overjoyed again... but wondering why I was so eager to go through these sleepless nights and the endless laundry again!

You're very lucky to have a wonderful son and husband, and also lucky to be going to college---enjoy those all you can! Meanwhile, talking might help, especially to any girlfriends you have, or your mother-in-law. I have a sweetie of a husband, but I don't think he ever really understood why I would get so depressed over it. Or if he did, he wasn't saying anything! A local support group might help. Women who have been through a miscarriage or who are fighting infertility will understand you very well. Good luck!

When You Just Can't Breastfeed - Blog Entry

15 Aug 2006 04:21 AM

Thank you for an excellent article! I hated breastfeeding my first daughter, struggled with my son, but now with our youngest daughter it's easy and a joy to share with her. Just depends on the baby in my case, or age! But I wish I'd had your article for comfort many years ago!

Questions About Euthanasia - Blog Entry

15 Aug 2006 12:01 AM

Thank you for tackling such a difficult subject. Your list of questions are an inspired idea: the decision is simply too big for many to face, which can put off dealing with it and make the situation worse. But your questions take us step-by-step through the situations, which is a huge help. I hope we never face this decision, but feel more prepared now, just in case. Bookmarked!

Thank you, THANK you. I love this philosophy. My own definition of success is happiness, and you don't find or make that with money or one-upmanship or fame or beating those freakin' Joneses. Loved your article!

Kitchen Guide--Food Storage Part 2 - Blog Entry

13 Aug 2006 12:30 PM

Thanks! I've been in hospital before with food poisoning; it's no joke. And my husband doesn't listen to me when it comes to leaving things out on the counter all morning, because he's too lazy to put it away... I'm posting your article on the Fridge door tonight! (wish me luck!)

Crafts to Make for Your Pets - Blog Entry

12 Aug 2006 02:58 PM

I love your article--hope to see more pet ideas soon! Our puppy likes the home-made toys much better than the commercial squeaky ones (which he doesn't touch). His favourite is a two-litre soda bottle that we dropped a handful of his dog kibble into, then squished flat and bent up so that the kibble was trapped inside but still visible. He goes berserk with it, throwing it, digging at it, shaking it to try to get to the food.

Do Parents Support School Uniforms? - Blog Entry

12 Aug 2006 11:18 AM

We have uniforms in Ireland, and I'm glad to have them. I think it promotes the community feeling and loyalty to a school, and does credit to the school when its students are on trips out, etc. But uniform companioes sometimes take advantage, and the costs can be quite high. Great article.
