What a fun assignment. Too bad I couldn't get out to the site to learn about it---I would have joined in. However, too much going on at the time.

Being partial to dogs, I loved the shot of Katie, the ranch dog.

That's handy to have in our bag of tricks! I noticed that changing everything to black and white and then bringing the balloon back in color drew attention to just the balloon and van. What an effective way to trick the eye into not seeing other, distracting objects that you can't get rid of when you take the shot.

Good advice, and handy to know! It seem like you'd have to be sure to use a tripod (NOT shoot hand held) so that you had the exact same shot with two different exposures.

Thanks for the instructions.

Common Errors in Photographing Subjects - Blog Entry

I did have to laugh when you mentioned having headless photos, and leaving the lens cap on. I have family members who always chop off someone's head in the photo. Another one said she would do all the wedding shots for my uncle. There were a number of good shots that she took . . . but unfortunately the lens cap was on for every one of them, so with the exception of one photo that someone else took, there are no pictures of their wedding. As Bill said, make sure you take the lens cap off.

Bill, it might also be nice if in a future blog you address the fact that what you see through the viewfinder may not always be exactly what the lens sees. (You know-- not all cameras are TTL, and there is a % of view that you see that the lens doesn't cover.)
