My Husband’s 40th !

Every year my husband’s parents host a birthday dinner for my brother in law and sister in law but never for my husband. This bothers me. My husband says he does not let him be bothered by this but he is human so it is only natural that it does bother him. This year we chose not to attend his sister’s birthday dinner because of some issues we had going on at the time and my mother in law choose to call my husband at work and chew him out for not going. Now let me say my husband did … Continue reading

We Cant Make All Outings Sorry

I want to move far away from Texas! Not because I do not like the state because it is great; a little hot right now but I still like it. I want to move because the farther we move from the in-laws the easier my life will be. I know that sounds mean but at least if we lived far away I would have an answer to tell the kids why they never see my husband’s family other than on holidays. The kids are starting to not expect to see the grandparents on that side or the Aunts, Uncles and … Continue reading

The Economy and Telling the Boss You’re Pregnant

Telling the boss about a pregnancy is often a stressful situation, whether the new mom is planning to stay employed after the baby is born or not. In the current economic downturn, the stakes are even higher. Companies are laying off workers in almost every sector and women may have real reasons to be worried. If layoffs are coming, women may fear telling the boss because they fear losing the job. Despite federal laws, pregnant workers continue to be seen as more expendable than their non pregnant peers. Employers may worry that the mother will leave the job after the … Continue reading

Our Daughter’s Baptism Part IV

With my family dressed for the joyous occasion that was our baby girl’s baptism, we led the caravan (of extended family) to the church. We sat were we like to sit with two small children; in the back! Mass began and we did what we always do; help our son understand what is going on throughout the course of the mass (he enjoys singing and extending the sign of peace). After mass, all of the extended family gathered in the back of the church and when our parish priest was ready we all headed up to the baptismal font near … Continue reading

Planning a Baby Shower Part V

Today is the day of the baby shower for my thirty three weeks pregnant sister. The preparations for this baby shower have been ongoing for the past several months. Things really were put into high gear about three weeks ago with the writing and sending of the baby shower invitations. The planning continued yesterday as I made six dozen cupcakes, got together all my supplies for the baby shower games and items needed for preparing and frosting the six dozen cupcakes, I picked up the flowers for both the door prizes and cupcake decoration, and many other miscellaneous items (like … Continue reading

On the Child Sent Back to Russia

It’s been nearly a month since two nations were stunned by the actions of an adoptive mother and grandmother, who put a seven-year-old adopted from Russia on a plane to Moscow as an unaccompanied minor. He bore a note addressed to the Russian Ministry of Education from his adoptive mother. Apparently his grandmother, who lived next door to his adoptive mother in Tennessee, had spoken with a driver in Russia and hired him to meet the party at the airport and drive to the Russian Ministry of Education. The driver was under the impression, from phone calls the week before, … Continue reading

Winter Storm Sanity Savers

It’s funny how Mother Nature tends to dictate a parent’s schedule. For example, I have a slew of family members living on the East Coast who are bracing for a major winter storm. Significant snow is predicted to make traveling a nightmare for residents in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey. The storm has forced my cousin to cancel a business trip to Boston. Instead, she’ll spend the snow day trying to figure out how to keep her four kids entertained indoors. If you are looking for ways to keep the kiddos from contracting a severe case of cabin fever, … Continue reading

Prospective Parents Health: Possible Impacts on International Adoption

My last blog began to address a reader’s questions about whether health conditions would disqualify someone from adopting. In that blog I talked about possible impacts on domestic infant adoption and adoption from state foster care. This blog will talk about possible impacts a health condition could have in pursuing international adoption. For international adoption, someone with a serious health issue may very well be disqualified by certain countries. Other countries can set their own standards on who is eligible to adopt. They often do not have the same anti-discrimination laws we do. Various countries have set conditions that their … Continue reading

Broom Mates – Marge Palatini

Who says you can only talk about witches on Halloween? I love this picture book by Marge Palatini, and so even though we’re still three months out from the spookiest holiday (unless you count National Mother-in-Law Day) I’m going to share it with you. Gritch the Witch was studying herself in her magic mirror, noting how worn out she looked. She needed to get some beauty sleep, badly. She climbed into bed and was just dozing off when the doorbell rang (or rather, screamed.) With a sigh, Gritch went to the door, to find her sister, Mag the Hag, standing … Continue reading

10 Tips for Eating Your Way Through the 4th of July

I imagine that if you are American, you likely have plans this weekend. I further suppose that your plans include food. . .lots of it. My mother-in-law, who I swear is somehow related to Martha Stewart via some type of home organizing gene, puts out quite the spread for the 4th of July. I haven’t spoken with her but I have visions of bratwurst, chicken, cheeseburgers, no less than 3 or 4 desserts, potato salad, and the list goes on. (She actually puts on quite the spread for any holiday. . .) However, a day of binging can set you … Continue reading
