Hi Janet! Your response rang true. I've seen kids do this with their parents (mom or dad), but somehow that doesn't help when it's happening to you. I've start a thread on this at http://forums.families.com/need-advice-my-son-acts-out-when-i-teach,t101988 so we can continue the discussion.

Thanks Lessly. He doesn't come to class all the time, but he does listen if I give him a warning. It's difficult though when everyone is watching to see how you'll discipline your child. I should have set up a system before we got to class instead of trying to deal with the whole thing on the spot. Keep me posted on your approaches. :)

Looking for My Waist... Seriously - Blog Entry

Hi again Andrea. It looks like there are some built-in blockades to your success. However, you also have some strengths, like walking. Do you have a buddy that you can commit to walking with every other day? Once or twice a week is not a bad start at all. As far as food goes, what about changing one thing - no matter how small? Examples: still going out to eat but it has to be Panera or Subway; writing on your calendar on Sunday - thaw one or two meats from the freezer, then cook at least that many times. (I hope this doesn't sound like a lecture -- I just love sharing ideas.) Keep us posted!

Hi Andrea: I guess that I'm always hesitant about diets because most of them are so hard to stick to. Dropping the transfats sounds good however, because it sounds less like a controlling diet and more like a lifestyle change. Would you mind sharing with us what kind of food you keep around the house? Also, do you have an exercise routine? The only ways that I have ever lost weight are by cutting down on portions, drinking more herbal tea and water, and especially -- by increasing exercise.

Yoga in Public School - Blog Entry

09 Jan 2007 07:33 PM

I've taught yoga to kids several times. Recently, I taught at a public middle school to 40 pre-teen girls. Many of them came up to me after class finished to tell me that they really enjoyed it or that they were already doing yoga. Younger kids love it, too, especially when you incorporate the animal poses into the practice. My son's elementary school is having yoga as part of an afterschool program. Let's spread the word. It's a great way to show kids that exercise comes in many forms. To address Melissa's comment, I agree that it can easily be done without getting into any religious aspects.
