Absalom, O Absalom - Children Who Go Astray - Blog Entry

Hi Dan,

I realize that you were looking for something deeper - which is why I touched on the sealing power with Joseph Smith, Jr.'s quote:

". . . that the eternal sealings of faithful parents and the divine promises made to them for valiant service in the Cause of Truth, would save not only themselves, but likewise their posterity. Though some of the sheep may wander, the eye of the Shepherd is upon them, and sooner or later they will feel the tentacles of Divine Providence reaching out after them and drawing them back to the fold. Either in this life or the life to come, they will return. They will have to pay their debt to justice; they will suffer for their sins; and may tread a thorny path; but if it leads them at last, like the penitent Prodigal, to a loving and forgiving father's heart and home, the painful experience will not have been in vain. Pray for your careless and disobedient children; hold on to them with your faith. Hope on, trust on, till you see the salvation of God."

My brother also left the church, literally fled as far away as he could. He declared it false, worthless and treated that great treasure of the gospel with the greatest of disdain. There was a time when my parents ever despaired of seeing him back within the fold of the church. The one day, through startling circumstances, my brother started see that things were different. He'd committed armed robbery, he served time in a vile California prison, he was addicted to cigarettes and various drugs, and many more horrifying things. He turned his life around - through gentle caring and urging of my parents. Through the sealing power of the priesthood and the Holly Ghost's gentle whispers, he turned his life around.

Dan, I've seen happen this too many times to distrust that it can't happen in anyone's mortal life. There are great, great promises to the faithful parents who sought after the kingdom of God through ordinances and covenants. There are many things that will happen in the world to come - some we understand, some we don't. This is not the forum to address those sacred things. If you'd like to email me away from this forum I can share with you the things I have learned. But Br. Joseph does touch on what you are talking about in the above quote.

Linda is in the process of getting her website up and running, which she hopes to have completed in the next few days. In the meantime, for anyone who would like to order her book you can contact her directly at scanlan@srt.com with One in the subject line. She'll work out the details until the website is up and running.

It's a delightful young reader book to add to your children's library.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! Our soliders are our life's blood and the line of defense between us and the enemy. They have my undying gratitude and that editor not only needs to lose his job but quickly needs a transfer to a 3rd world country where freedoms do not abound.

We'll have to see how it all plays out. I don't think he'll be able to remain the defensive coordinator AND the head coach for much longer. Eventually he's going to have to give up the defensive end. But BYU has gone back to the old Cougar style of defense -- I think we're going to see great progress on the defensive end of the field now.

I know! When I read that about the letter bomb I thought it was just desserts. I was laughing so hard simply because the man intended to hurt so many people and ended up killing himself in the process because of sheer stupidity. I know I need to be kinder - but wow, talk about fate biting you on the butt!

So very true, Lisa. www.lds.org has a wealth of information for those of any faith. Latter-day believe in God, we believe in Jesus Christ -- we are Christians. And so any Christian looking to draw closer to their God, regardless of faith, will find a treasure trove of information on that website. Thanks for pointing that out.
