Do you know the way to San Jose?

Two weeks in California

Well it is now two weeks since Maor and I arrived and I've decided to try my hand at blogging. This way our friends and family and other interested parties (?!) can keep up with our adventures in sunny California.

We are still living in the hotel which is not as bad as it sounds. The hotel has a kitchen and laundry room as well as cable tv which we are all junking out on. But all good things must come to an end and we will be moving into our apartment on Sunday. It is a 2 bedroom apartment with a den (which is another room but since it doesn't have a closet they can't call it a bedroom. go figure) in a complex about 5 blocks away from the bet knesset. We have a washer dryer in our apartment (many of the complexes have laundry rooms instead of a washing machine in the apartment so it's a plus) and a dishwasher we can't use (kashrut). There is a swimming pool, hot tub, and exercise room in the complex. Our complex is right along the Los Gatos Creek trail which is very nice for bicycling. To see the trail go to: http://www.sjparks.org/Trails/LosGatos/LosGatos.asp

We are still trying to figure out the kashrut issues out here. There are 100s of hechsherim and it is hard to know which are acceptable. Unlike New York, it is harder to find kosher food out here but once you learn the symbols and stores it gets easier. Also there aren't really kosher restaurants in this area.

Maor started school on August 30th. She has 9 kids in her class, 3 girls and 6 boys, including an Israeli girl from Revava. For some classes they are only girls and are together with girls from 7th and 8th grade as well. And this is the larger of the two "orthodox" day schools! They get a lot of homework and I hope Maor will get used to it.

Today we got a car - a white Chrysler Voyager minivan which we found on craigslist. Unfortunately I cannot drive it since my license was stolen in New York (I love NY) and Arthur is a stickler about waiting for me to have possession of my license before I drive. Bah, humbug.

That is all the news for now. Will post again with more reflections and information soon. Take care for now.
