23 Jan 2007 03:32 PM Maor's Bat MitzvahThis past Wednesday was the hebrew date of Maor's 12th birthday, 27 Tevet. Although we promised her a party for her friends in Israel in the summer, we could not let the actual event go uncelebrated. On that Wednesday she brought donuts to school to share with her friends and that Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh Shvat, the three girls from her class slept over for Shabbat. They had a good time together, including staying up late Friday night so they could have hot cocoa with Hershey's kisses after becoming chalavi (and one of the girls waits 6 hours so you can imagine what time this was!). On Shabbat we gave a kiddush in the shul with a big decorated cake from the local kosher bakery (yes there is one) and Maor gave a dvar Torah (in English!). Then two girls from the shul who are Maor's age but learn in the other day school joined us for lunch and the afternoon. All the girls know eachother from a Bat Mitzvah club which is run by Chabad - the girls meet about once a month for a fun activity and learning. They also got together one Sunday for ice skating and they will have a Shabbaton as well. Since there are so few orthodox kids around, I am glad of anything that gives Maor contact with other girls her age. The girls played together all Shabbat afternoon and their parents came to get them on Motzei Shabbat. Signing off for now. Chasida This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. No comments on this article yet. Be the first to comment! Discuss this article
