President's Day Weekend

On Saturday night we drove to Sacramento, the state capitol of California(http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0108187.html ). Sunday morning we started our day at the Govenor's Mansion (http://search.parks.ca.gov/cgi-bin/MsmGo.exe?grab_id=185&EXTRA_ARG=&CFGNAME=MssFind%2Ecfg&host_id=42&page_id=12256000&query=sacramento&hiword=sacramento ) which was last inhabited by Ronald and Nancy Reagan in 1967. Our next stop was Sutter's Fort which was the first settlement in Sacramento then part of Mexico (http://search.parks.ca.gov/cgi-bin/MsmGo.exe?grab_id=185&EXTRA_ARG=&CFGNAME=MssFind%2Ecfg&host_id=42&page_id=11928320&query=sacramento&hiword=sacramento ). We then headed over to the state Indian Museum where we learned that John Sutter was NOT a hero to the Native Americans who lived in California and saw incredible headdresses and other artifacts (http://search.parks.ca.gov/cgi-bin/MsmGo.exe?grab_id=185&EXTRA_ARG=&CFGNAME=MssFind%2Ecfg&host_id=42&page_id=11993856&query=sacramento&hiword=sacramento ).

By this time, Maor had had enough history and we had a picnic lunch in a park. We then went to the Aerospace Museum of California (http://aerospacemuseumofcalifornia.org/home.html ) where we saw many different planes and Maor got to ride in a flight simulator twice once we paid and once she used her many charms and managed to get a free ride.

We ended our day with a movie Bridge to Terabithia (http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/terabithia/ ) and supper in our hotel room.

On Monday we began our day in Old Sacramento where we visited the California State Railroad Museum (http://www.californiastaterailroadmuseum.org/default.asp ) and had a tour of the museum and learned about the beginning of the transcontinental railroad which joined the eastern seaboard to the west coast of the United States. We then looked around on our own seeing different trains and upstairs seeing a display of model trains.

We next walked around Old Sacramento a bit before heading to Bob's Butcher Block & Deli (http://www.geocities.com/bobdeli/ ) for a treat of deli sandwiches for lunch. There are no kosher restaurants in San Jose.

We ended our visit to Sacramento at the Sacramento Zoo (http://www.saczoo.com/ ) where we saw some very playful cats â a mother tiger and one of her cubs, born November 24th(see a picture of the 3 cubs: http://www.saczoo.com/2_happening/images/ZooNews/Tiger/ZN12weekstiger.jpg  and read more about the endangered Sumatran tiger (http://www.saczoo.com/1_about/_animals/fact_sheets/sumatran_tiger2.pdf ).

Also in a playful mood were the mother and daughter snow leopards who are beautiful! Read more about the snow leopard at http://www.saczoo.com/1_about/_animals/fact_sheets/snow_leopard2.pdf .

Be sure to check out our pictures of the zoo animals and you can see Maor touching a very large snake!

We headed home tired and happy back to our routine. Arthur is traveling (tomorrow he's going to Minnesota) and Maor and I are studying. I am taking two online classes and it is tough being a student again! Interesting but not easy, a lot of work!

Purim is right around the corner and in its tracks, Pesach, which if you know me, you know how happy (NOT!) that makes me. Tonight we watched the Oscars which was a treat for me, yes I am into that nonsense and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Be well!
