Practical Christian Living- Matching Words And Actions

Yesterday I wrote about Jonah and how fear influenced Jonah’s actions. I wrote of how Jonah claimed to profess that he worshiped God and was a prophet of God, yet his behavior showed exactly the opposite. As always God made sure that whatever I wrote, I had the opportunity to put into practice in my own life. Last night a phone call sent me spiraling once more towards fear. Like Jonah, I felt fear trying to grab hold of me and dictate my actions. But I had an asset Jonah didn’t have – my husband, who takes his God-given role … Continue reading

Words And Actions That Don’t Match

What sort of example are you? Do you claim to worship and follow God, yet act in disobedience to God’s commands? When people look at you, do they see someone who professes one thing but does not act accordingly? This is what Jonah was like. He was a prophet of God. Yet when God told him to go to Nineveh with a message for the people, Jonah disobeyed and ran away from God’s command. This story is probably familiar to many of us from Sunday school. So often the emphasis seems to be on the fish or whale and yet … Continue reading

Non-Christian Memorials

I think one of the hardest places to be present for emotionally is a funeral for someone who died likely having rejected Christ as their savior. Unlike with the death of a believer, you can’t with an honest heart comfort someone with the fact the person is in heaven with God where one day they might be reunited together. Though the funeral for a non-believer can leave an added sadness, there really is a tactful and respectful way to remember the person and even turn the situation at hand to bring glory to God. Realize we really don’t know what … Continue reading

Frugal and Free Homeschooling {part 4}

Homeschooling is all about thinking outside of the box.  Homeschooling created the most brilliant minds in history before there was an internet connection and pricey curriculum.  Learning is living and living is learning.  It is really that simple. Outside of the Box Learning Let’s imagine a world without books, internet, and state standards.  How would you teach your child?  Now, as time goes on and your child progresses through the high school years, she may need online resources, tutoring, and calculus.  Understood.  Let’s push that aside for the moment and concentrate on the purpose of homeschooling that is to create critically … Continue reading

Stars Call for Chick-fil-A Boycott

If you’ve ever drive by a Chick-fil-A on a Sunday, you have probably noticed it is closed. Chick-fil-A believes that employees deserve Sundays off, but this also follows along the company’s Christian values. These values must pay off in some way. To me at least, it seems like everyone that works at Chick-fil-A is friendly and happier than the average fast food worker. But, that being said, some celebrities have a problem with the company and have called for a boycott. Ed Helms, of NBC’s “The Office,” is the latest in a string of celebs to condemn the company for … Continue reading

Money Is Not Evil

Money is the root of all evil. I’m sure you’ve heard that before. I’ve heard it a lot. I’ve even had to correct one pastor who uttered those very words. I hear or read it mostly in relation to debt. I guess that money is the problem instead of spending beyond one’s means. It’s just another way to not take responsibility for actions. It wasn’t me. The devil made me do it. It was the Twinkies. Money is not evil. Credit cards are not evil. Mortgages are not evil. These things are inanimate objects that serve a purpose. They are … Continue reading

Getting the Balance Right

One of the biggest problems Christians face is getting the balance right. What do I mean by that? A criticism leveled at Christians from those outside the church is that Christians don’t appear to live what they believe. Their words or professions and actions don’t match up. Of course, there are those who then go to the other extreme. They think that just by living the Christian life, they won’t have to say anything. It will be obvious to friends and neighbors that you live as you do, behave as you do and make the decisions you do because you … Continue reading

The Danger of Selective Reading

Recently it occurred to me that there are distinct similarities between crossword puzzles and reading the bible. Let me explain. Often in a crossword, the clue doesn’t seem to make sense. You can’t think of the word you need to fill in the squares. Then you work on a couple of the clues going the other way. That fills in some of the letters and suddenly, you have enough clues to figure out the missing word. It’s like a light making everything clear. It’s like that when we’re reading the bible. We need to look at what is going on … Continue reading

Yoga Types: Karma Yoga

Karma yoga is also known as Buddhi yoga. This is a spiritual form of yoga based on an ancient text known as the Bhagavad Gita. The translation in Sanskrit of karma is action and yoga is union, so Karma yoga is designed to create a path of unity through action. This form of yoga is the most commonly practiced by members of the Hindu religion. It is different from hatha yoga, bikram yoga and other forms of yoga exercise in that karma yoga brings together the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga practice. Not all practitioners of Karma yoga are … Continue reading

Why Are Children Disobedient?

Many parents and teachers will tell you that children these days are disobedient. Why is that so? Because they are learning it from us. Too often we know exactly what we should do in a situation and yet we don’t do it. Even as I wrote those words, God convicted me. I knew I was guilty of doing exactly that. Yesterday I thought about calling someone to see how they were but didn’t because I wanted to do all the things I had to do, so I could finish reading the latest Jodi Picoult book. So this time when I … Continue reading
