Swiss Family Robinson (1960) Movie Review

The Robinson family is moving to New Guinea. Unfortunately, their ship hits a bad storm on the way and they end up shipwrecked near an island whose existence is apparently known to no one. Not one to sit by and wait for a rescue that isn’t coming, Mr. Robinson takes charge of his wife, three sons, and the myriad of animals that the fleeing crew has left behind. They make their way to shore with as much off the ship as they can. This 1960 adventure movie chronicles their escapades as they struggle to live not only on a subsistence … Continue reading

Christian Families in the Community

Do you have fond childhood memories of that one neighborhood house where all the kids would end up playing? I do. There was always Hi C and cookies and we knew that we were welcomed there. Once I became a mother, I decided that I wanted my house to be that place. A big part of the reason why is because I want to know who my children are playing with and what is going on. The other reason is because my husband and I wanted to reach out and be a family to the kids who needed one. There … Continue reading

Christian Families Blog

My name is Christina Huffman and I am one of the new Christian Family Bloggers. I thought I would take a few minutes to introduce myself. My husband Joshua and I have been married for ten years. We met when we were just 18 and 19 years old through our church’s campus ministry. We were friends for several years before a romance ever blossomed. I am thankful for those years of friendship. It makes our marriage stronger. Joshua and I have four children. their ages are 7, 5, 2 and almost 1. We are birth parents, foster parents and in … Continue reading

The Unpaid Worker

The attitude of some churches concerns me. Sometimes it comes from the pastor or minister in charge and sometimes it can come from the congregation. Years ago friends of ours, where the husband was assistant minister, were criticized severely because his wife wanted to keep working and therefore didn’t have time to do the things the church expected her to do, things like running the ladies’ bible study. Their main objection seemed to be ‘but that’s what the assistant minister or minster’s wife has always done.’ That is without doubt the weakest reason to ever keep doing it. Just because … Continue reading

Marriage Advice: Different Styles of Discipline in Your Marriage

How you discipline your children or how you plan to discipline your children are not likely topics of discussion for two people planning to get married. If you did talk about this prior to getting married and worked out a number of these issues ahead of time, my hat is off to you. My husband and I were together for many years before we were married and our daughter arrived just shortly after our first anniversary. As an infant, discipline wasn’t really an issue – discipline doesn’t really start until your children are older. Discipline Can Make Your Marriage Bumpy … Continue reading

Your Biggest Fans

My husband is quite the super star in our home. While I’m with our kindergartener and three year old all day, feeding them and playing with them, it’s their daddy who gets flooded with adoration when coming home from work. At the sound of the garage door opening, the kids drop everything they are doing as if some super pop star has just arrived. It’s not just our boys who are excited to see him either. My husband’s arrival home means I have my best friend with me again to talk with and to help occupy the kids. We are … Continue reading

Teaching through Song

One of our roles as parents is teaching our children things that we feel are important. It begins by helping them learn about the little world around them when they are tiny and expands into teaching them about the great big world out there as they grow. Soon, we’re helping them get ready to start school and before long, helping them with homework. Memorizing facts, and especially lists, can often become monotonous. One of the great ways to make memorization more fun -not to mention more effective- is to make up little songs. I remember being taught this way in … Continue reading

“Home-Making” Book Review

I would like to tell you about a gem of a book. It’s called Home-Making it was written by Reverend J.R. Miller way back in 1892. This is what I call, “An oldie, but a goodie.” In this book Rev. Miller explores what a Christian home should be like. He starts by addressing married life. He says, “Back of the home lies marriage. The wedding day throws it’s shadow far down the future.” In other words, the foundation of a Christian family and a Christian home begins with the marriage of mom and dad. He talks about the sacredness and … Continue reading
