“Christian” Healing and Mental Health (2)

In our last article on this topic, we looked at some of the harm that can come from so-called “Christian” healing. Obviously, this form of healing has little to do with Christianity at all, but it is called that and as such, is effectively sending out the wrong message to many people. Today we look at further examples of “help gone wrong.” Jane was sick with both a debilitating physical illness and major depression. As is often the case, her family was not a great support to her, simply believing that she could and should just “pull her socks up.” … Continue reading

Concerned and Consistent Christianity

‘To Love anyone is nothing less than to wish that person good,’ Thomas Aquinas said. Sometimes showing our love, requires us to correct or discipline as we may have to do with our children. Or we may have to admonish or to warn those we love, as I did in the letter I wrote to a friend. See my blog, what to do when a friend is in danger. In 1 Corinthians 4:14-21 Paul is faced with this problem of having to exercise tough love. Paul recognized that the Corinthian church had problems. The church was divided and worldly, I … Continue reading

Little Things Mean a Lot

Yesterday we looked at how encouraging words can boost spirits. I hope you’ve been trying it in your life. Our minister was on vacation last week, so one of the men of our congregation gave the sermon on Sunday. His talk was practical and biblical. On the way out of church several people thanked him for the message and the time he devoted to preparing it. Having in the past been used to doing a weekly 40 minute lecture for a bible study group, I’m well aware how much preparation is involved in such a talk. On the other hand … Continue reading

Listen, Learn, And Then?

What a weekend! I came back home at 8pm Sunday from a weekend in Sydney. No, I wasn’t up there to see the two large ships in Sydney harbor or the soccer final or any of the other myriad things happening in Sydney that weekend but I was at a conference. At the Hughenden Hotel around 120 other writers and illustrators from all over Australia and from New Zealand gathered to talk, share and learn more of the writing, illustrating and publishing industry. A number of these people I had met online. It was good to be able to put … Continue reading

Is Faith Blind Belief?

In today’s world the word “faith” has been mistreated and misused. Faith has come to mean “believing in something for which there is no evidence” or “a blind belief” or even “believing in something which is impractical or irrational.” In fact, one of the definitions listed for faith by Dictionary.com is the following: “belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.” Do these definitions really describe faith? Do these definitions really describe a Biblical faith? The answer to these questions can be found in Hebrews 11:1, which states: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, … Continue reading

Overcome Evil with Good

Christians should always be set apart in the world. In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:13 Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” Christians should be different from the world in everything that they do from the way they speak to the way they work. When dealing with enemies or others who might do evil to them, Christians have the opportunity to be a shining light … Continue reading
