Cloth Diapering Tips

Cloth diapers can save quite a lot of money when you use them instead of disposable diapers. But sometimes they can actually cost more. This occurs when people purchase extra equipment or accessories to go with the cloth diapers, use cleaning practices that cost more money, or when they give up on cloth diapering because of the inconvenience. So, I thought I would include some money saving tips about using cloth diapers.

The way to get the poop out of a diaper is to rinse it in the toilet. Some people simply grab and end of the diaper and swoosh it around in the toilet, but that is just a little germy for me. A better way is to use a sprayer to rinse the diaper.

Now, they do sell special diaper sprayers, but they can be expensive. A better solution is to go to your local Home Depot or Lowes and purchase a sprayer with a hose for your regular shower. The length of the hose will depend on how far away your toilet is from your shower. You can also get a simple and cheap rubber hose that will reach from the tub faucet, although an actual sprayer will have more power to get the diaper rinsed well.

Hanging those diapers to dry can be the best way to go. Now only will you save money on the drying process, but the sun will naturally bleach your cloth diapers for you. If you don’t want to invest in a clothes line, or if your area does not allow clothes lines, opt for a retractable line. You can often just clip one end to the end of a deck, a tree, etc. These retractable lines are pretty cheap to purchase, too.

Forget the fancy diaper pail. Simply opt for a standard paint bucket or reuse a cat or dog food container to store the soiled diapers between washes. Do you need a lid? Fashion one out of a circle of plywood. You can cover it with duck tape to increase the durability.
