Cooking With Your Kids14 May 2006 06:08 AM My son always wants to help when I cook (he's 19 months old). Last month, he made his first Marinara Sauce. (Ok, so he shook the seasonings in until I told him to stop, but he loved it!) This month, he made Apple Crisp. (Well, I measured and he poured and stirred.) He also helped me tenderize chicken. The meat tenderizer was a bit heavy for him but he loved the pounding. I agree, I think hands-on learning in the kitchen is really important for kids. It is also important for us to teach our kids how to take care of themselves when they grow up - teaching them how to prepare their own food properly is part of that. Whenever I vacuum or do any housework, he wants to help. I used to let him Swiffer(original) the kitchen floor but since we moved, we have carpeting everywhere. The CarpetFlick was a Godsend because at 19 months, he's just not strong enough to handle the vacuum (although he tries). So I bought the CarpetFlick specifically for him. When I put it together, I only put enough of the handle together so that it was the perfect height for him. Now when my son leaves crumbs on the floor, I simply ask him to clean them up and he gets his CarpetFlick and does the job! This isn't adult cleaning equipment but I love it for my son! This is SO TRUE! It is the only way to break a terribly destructive cycle. If he neglects you and then you start neglecting him, it just feeds the cycle and makes things ever so much worse. No surprise his first and favorite word is "Daddy"! Diaper Free Baby12 May 2006 06:51 PM My son is 19 months now and we have a potty for him that is right across from our toilet. Whenever we go to the bathroom, he follows and sits on his potty. Lots of positive reinforcement comes with that so he's taken very well to it. He hasn't made a deposit yet, but he is growing more comfortable with the potty. He's just started giving us signals for when he is about to have or is working on a bowel movement, so by connecting the two, hopefully we'll get him potty trained somewhat early. (According to Huggies: "The average age for completion is 34 months for girls and 37.5 months for boys.")
