Josephine Baker: Black Venus Shining

27 Feb 2006 03:05 PM

I saw the Josephine Baker Story (1991) and will forever be struck by how tragic it was that Josephine Baker wasn't appreciated in her time - or by her own society. She was a superstar in paris and had preferential treatment just about everywhere she went there and yet, here in the United States, she was a victim of terrible segregation laws.

Much like Sammy Davis Jr, she was good enough to headline at the finest resorts but not good enough to swim in their pools.

Baby Beethoven: Symphony of Fun

25 Feb 2006 01:32 PM

"Baby Mozart" is still the one that stops traffic in our home. Our son is at the point where he understands everything we say but he still doesn't have words to communicate well with us and we get the ocassional emotional outburst because of it. "Baby Mozart" is absolutely brilliant at calming him and getting him smiling again.

I don't know what we'd do without the Baby Einstein DVDs!

Two RO*TEL Dip Recipes

Your guests WILL love it! Our favorite combination is 1 lb Velveeta and 1 jar of Pace Picante Sauce (hot). It is a great dip, but it also makes some awesome nachos!

Baby Carriers 101

22 Feb 2006 10:09 PM

I had a Snugli, front carrier for my son. I loved it and he especially liked being snuggled up to my chest. The one problem we encountered is that extensive wearing of the Snugli led to mastitis for me. If, God willing, we have another child, I'm all for the Maya-style Sling!

Thanks for the great info - I knew nothing about these other options!

The Marriage Revolution

Sometimes keeping it together isn't easy but it is extremely rewarding when you can get through the tough times and make it to even better times.

My husband and I will celebrate our 7th anniversary tomorrow. I can honestly say that the highs get higher and the lows get lower - but the highs come a lot more often than the lows!

Is My Baby Getting Enough Milk?

21 Feb 2006 09:06 PM

Great points!

One thing I didn't realize when I had my son (my first baby) was that there is nothing wrong with offering the child a breast every hour or two to stimulate milk production. By the time my son cried to be fed, he was too hungry and frustrated and I was too engorged to make nursing easy.

Ahh, the things we learn with the first child...

Making Checkers

Cool ideas, Sherry!

I'm having visions of a checkerboard sleeping bag and a zip up pillowcase that holds all the mini-pillow checkers! This checkerboard stuff really provides some cool jumping off points for fun projects!

Exercising Pain Away

21 Feb 2006 08:49 PM

This is so true!

I had a terrible backache yesterday and managed to "walk it off" on my treadmill in just 30 minutes. I can't call it an aerobic workout, but it sure did stop the back pain!

Two Southern Fried Side Dishes

21 Feb 2006 08:44 PM

I was just reading in Muscle & Fitness that Green Tomato Extract is the new magic potion for building muscle and burning fat. The batter and deep frying may not help much though. But hey, who can say no to fried green tomatoes?!
