Sometimes, You Just Have To Laugh About It...

21 Feb 2006 08:42 PM

Rice is definitely the best medicine. There have been many nights when I awakened to the "gurgle-gurgle" of my dog's tummy. The first thing I do when I hear that sound is fire up the rice cooker and throw in some white rice, beef bouillon and garlic powder. Dogs don't generally eat when they've got upset tummies, but the beef bouillon and garlic powder are practically guaranteed to get them to eat the rice.

Bathtub Medicine

Great article! I've done the same with my own son.

We dealt with colic by giving him a bath about 5 minutes before Colic Kickoff (as we liked to call it). His nights of crying were replaced by giggles in the bath tub! Until he could sit in the tub on his own, we would bathe together. (He hated those tub seats and always preferred to "float" on my legs.)

For want of essential oils during fevers, I'll steep a couple Peppermint Tea bags in the tub before filling it for him. This gives nearly instant relief.

Imitating Designer Spaces

Great tips! I've always loved the look of tapestries but could never really justify the expense of even buying a knockoff. One day, as I was walking through a fabric store, I realized that a few stitches and a remnant yard of tapestry style fabric could do just as much for a room. Add a thrift store frame for a couple bucks and you've got a great piece of art!

Baking with Elisabeth

We did! Food can be so much fun when you're preparing it with kids. You need to make some extra time and be prepared for a big clean-up but it is so awesome to see them putting it all together in their heads. (After all, baking can be both chemistry and science lessons as well as tasty!) I know I always loved being able to help my grandmother in the kitchen. There is also a certain sense of accomplishment that kids get from creating something from scratch.

Fitness Material - Review

This sounds like a great study! The diet & weight loss industry does spend loads of money on lobbyists. Although I wasn't aware of the change in BMI classifications, I'm not at all surprised that the NIH would do such a thing.

Living Together is NOT like being Married

Catch the Olympic Spirit: Register Your Child for the Special Olympics!

What a great suggestion!

I don't have a special needs child, but my husband and I have decided to become SA volunteers and get our son involved as a volunteer as well. There is so much more than athletics going on in Special Olympics and everyone should get involved with it. It broadens the mind, expands the heart and brings untold joys to your life!

Avoiding an Episiotomy

There are just some things you wish your doctor would discuss with you. This was one of them for me. Of course, hindsight is 20/20.

I never knew about perineal massage and suffered excruciating pain at the hands of a doctor who felt she could stretch things out a bit before my son crowned. In my opinion, she would have been a wonderful Inquisitor. After all that agony (and back labor with no drugs to boot) I had an episiotomy. Healing was slow and there were additional complications. Thank God for Dermoplast!

I strongly recommend perineal massage for any pregnant woman!

What is a Doula?

10 Feb 2006 02:11 AM

Many women find themselves extremely concerned about money issues prior to the birth of a child and are hesitant to dish out several hundred dollars for their own comfort (I think it is one of those hormones that kicks in during pregnancy that makes us want to suffer for our child).

A great idea for a baby shower gift is to have several friends chip in to pay for a Doula.

Personally, I can't think of anything I would appreciate more!
